Nuclear Man was created when Lex Luthor genetically altered a sample of Superman's DNA (recovered from a strand of hair the man of steel donated to a museum), stored it in some kind of high tech container and placed within a nuclear missile scheduled to be decomissioned and was inadvertently thrown by Superman into the sun along with the missile. The large quantities of solar energy and radiation caused Nuclear Man to mature quickly and he subsequently returned to earth. In Superman's first encounter with the Nuclear Man, he pierced the Kryptonian's skin, causing him to lose his powers and his health. After Superman restored his powers and health with the use of the energy module from his ship, he defeated Nuclear Man by causing a sudden solar eclipse when he moved the moon in front of the sun, then dropped him into the heart of a nuclear reactor where he would become an abundant source of energy.
